Thank you so much for checking out our online shop. After over 13 years of restaurant ownership we have decided to take the plunge and offer our guests easier access to the merchandise they have so sweetly been purchasing in person from our display case. Having now opened our second restaurant- King Daddy's Chicken and Waffle- this online store is also a bit of a celebration. It is our dream to have two great spaces where you have an excellent experience and want to bring a piece of that experience home.
We think it's cool to know who you are buying from…. we are John and Julie Stehling. After many years working in the restaurant business for others we opened Early Girl Eatery in October, 2001 in downtown Asheville. John is a native North Carolinian and we chose Asheville for the community offered here. Western North Carolina's local food movement has always been ahead of the curve. We are blessed with a mild climate and a thriving agricultural community. We knew when we opened Early Girl that delicious local food was available to cook with and that we would love raising our children in a town so vibrant and close knit.
In these last 13 years downtown Asheville has grown and we have been lucky enough to see our business grow. We are grateful everyday for each guest that walks in the door and for the opportunity to give folks a space to eat well and connect with each other. Our newest business venture takes us down the road a few miles to West Asheville at 444 Haywood Road. John and I lived in West Asheville when we opened Early Girl. In fact Early Girl was supposed to be in West Asheville, but, as these things sometimes do, the building fell thru for us. So it does feel like full circle beginning again on the West side. Even before the doors opened we have been so welcomed by the East West Asheville community and feel so excited for the opportunity to be a part of what is already a booming neighborhood.
The items you see on this site either represent Early Girl Eatery or King Daddy's Chicken and Waffle or are used daily at either location. The pottery, glassware, aprons, sauces and jam have been throughly tested by our staff and clientele. To learn a little more about some of these items please check out the origins tab on this website. Also you will see that Early Girl holds more space on this site. We plan to grow what represents King Daddy's as you let us know what you love there. We look forward to your feedback. If you haven't been in either restaurant and just happened upon this site, welcome and we hope to see you soon.
As always, thank you so much for allowing us to do what we love.
Julie & John
